Huntley Youth Curling

"Strong fundamentals that can take you anywhere" — from Recreational fun to Provincial Champions

youth curler getting cleaning stoneFrom our first year Little Rockers' to the most Competitive Juniors, the Huntley Curling Club has something to offer you!

We would like to have every young curler learn the fundamentals and etiquette of this fine sport in a non-competitive environment.

We encourage participation, not competition during our program times.

The purpose of our youth program is to get the children out having fun and interacting with other young curlers.

We continually assess and re-assess all aspects of our program and try to keep up with our quickly developing youth.

All of our instructors are deeply committed to the youth of this program.

We want every curler to come away with a strong foundation and respect for this great sport.

Qualified Instruction

All our young members receive on and off ice instruction from qualified / certified / enthusiastic volunteers. Currently, we have National Coaching & Certification Progam (NCCP) level 1, 2 and 3 instructors that assist with the program. They are available to teach on Sunday and help coach your child. Every instructor at HCC is deeply committed to the positive development of our youth.
We have also used our experienced Bantam/Juniors to help with the younger curlers, a benefit to both the young curlers and to the Bantam/Juniors as it can be used towards their community service hours for their high school diploma.

If you would like to help, just ask us, we'd be happy to have you on board!

Zone Playdowns

For competitive curlers, we have had several teams this past year compete in all aspects of the zone play downs. From our Little Rock teams right through to our Juniors (boys & girls), we had great representation from all our youth!

Club Colours - Black &Gold

Our members expressed an interest in club jackets, so we held some raffles and ran an extra spiel over the last couple of years and were then able to purchase three sets of Huntley Team Jackets.

With the Club Team Jackets now being available, it enables every young curler to feel that they are part of the Huntley Team when they play in an out of club events.

U-18/U-21 And Little Rock Instruction Programs Schedules

All of our programs start with a 10-minute exercise program.  We want all our curlers to be stretched and warmed up properly before heading out onto the ice.
We usually work on a skill or a drill of some kind, and then finish off with a game.  Our members rotate positions and play with different players each week.
We stress the fun and participation, not competition during our program time.
We would like each new curler to come equipped with clean indoor running shoes.  Brooms are provided by the Huntley Curling Club, but we request that each curler supplies their own slider, which can be purchased at the club. The Youth program starts Sunday 15th October.

Program Overview & Schedule

Little Rock

AGES 8-12  1:30-3:00pm Sunday

The main emphasis is to have fun while teaching the fundamentals and etiquette of curling.  It is easy to teach the concepts of curling with our four new sets of Intermediate Lite Rocks.  We use the Ontario Skill Awards program for our technical aspects and have in club bonspiels and potluck spiels for fun.

U-18 / U-21 (Formerly Bantam / Junior)

AGES 13-17 / 18-20  11:00am-1:00pm Sunday

We work on the fine tuning of skills that were acquired from Little Rocks. Again, participation not competition is encouraged with some inter-club "friendlies" being organized during the season.

Student Curling

This is for the older experienced members that play in the Adult Evening League. Please consult one of the Coordinators for eligibility.

Volunteering

The success of any program is a direct result of the people that are involved in it, and OUR VOLUNTEERS ARE AWESOME!!!!

Our Instructors record an unbelievable amount of time every year, yet we wouldn't have such a complete program if we couldn't rely on our curler's parents and other associated people to do the rest. All of our bonspiels, fundraising, baking etc. couldn't happen if these other people weren't involved and committed as well.
We do not have a set amount of volunteer time required by each related family; we just ask that you happily help out when you can.

Huntley Youth Curling Program

Program Curriculum

There will be an orientation session for youth and parents that are new to the program which will take place on a Sunday prior to the start of the youth program.

Our program starts in mid-October and continues about 20 weeks until the end of March or early April.

The Youth Program Coordinator will provide more details about date/time to parents of registered youth in early October.

We incorporate the Ontario Skill Awards from the Ontario Curling Association (OCA) as part of our weekly instruction.

This excellent badge program is available to every youth member in our club and allows the children to progress through the different levels of skill development at their own speed.

Each year, all of our members participate in a Christmas Pot Luck, a "Friendly" or two between different local clubs, and an end of the year Potluck/Awards Day.

Bonspiels - For both Competitive and Non-Competitive Curlers

The Huntley Curling Club hosts an annual St Patrick's Day "Novice" Little Rock Spiel that all our members take part in with prizes often sponsored by local businesses for decorated people / brooms / teams etc...

Our program coordinators mix and match all the kids, to ensure everyone plays on a balanced team.

For our older members, we host two Open Spiels; one for competitive curlers and one for social curlers, with all of our program members taking part.

Both Little Rockers and Bantam/Juniors participate in & out of club bonspiels.

We strongly encourage each child to participate in at least one or two out of club spiels every year (more the better) to get more experience and see more of the curling world.
